- Cylinder is the specific term for a linear-motion device that extends and retracts a rod (pneumatic, hydraulic, electric). Actuator is the broader term for any device that converts an input (air, fluid, electricity) into mechanical motion (linear or rotary). All cylinders are actuators, but not all actuators are cylinders (a quarter-turn pneumatic valve actuator, for example, is rotary).
- Duty cycle is the percentage of time the cylinder is actively cycling vs. resting. A cylinder cycling continuously at 100% duty cycle generates much more heat and wear than one cycling intermittently. Pneumatic cylinders handle 100% duty cycle without issue. Electric cylinders need to be sized for the duty cycle - run a 50% duty cycle unit at 100% and you'll burn out the motor or screw.
- Pneumatic is cheap, simple, fast, and tolerates abuse. Forces up to a few thousand pounds, speeds limited mostly by air supply. Hydraulic delivers massive force in a small package (tens of thousands of pounds) but needs a power unit, plumbing, and seal maintenance. Electric gives you programmable position, velocity, and force, with excellent repeatability and clean operation, but it costs more upfront and doesn't like overloads. Pneumatic for high-cycle on/off motion, hydraulic for heavy force, electric for precision and programmability.
