- Three temperature scales used in industry. Celsius (°C) is the SI standard and what most of the world uses for process work. Fahrenheit (°F) is North American convention and still standard in HVAC, building, and a lot of US plant work. Kelvin (K) is absolute zero based, used in scientific and high-temperature work. Conversions: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32, K = °C + 273.15. Most controllers and transmitters let you switch units in the configuration.
- Thermocouples generate a small voltage at the junction of two dissimilar metals. Cheap, rugged, wide range (some types go to 1700°C), but lower accuracy and slower drift. RTDs use the change in resistance of a pure metal (usually platinum) with temperature. More accurate, more stable, but narrower range (typically -200 to 850°C) and more fragile. Rule of thumb: RTDs below 500°C where accuracy matters, thermocouples above 500°C or in rough service.
- Sensor: the wetted measurement element (thermocouple, RTD, thermistor). Switch: closes or opens a contact at a setpoint, on/off only. Transmitter: outputs 4-20 mA or HART for a control system, gives continuous reading. Use a sensor with separate signal conditioning when you need flexibility. A switch for simple alarm or interlock duty. A transmitter for any control loop or anywhere you want the actual value back to the DCS.
