- Two ways to slice it. By what they tell you: switches give point-level on/off, transmitters give continuous level, sight glasses give visual indication. By how they measure: float, displacer, capacitance, conductive, ultrasonic, radar (pulse and guided wave), differential pressure, and laser. Plus all the accessories - mounting hardware, displays, alarms, and intrinsically safe barriers for hazardous areas.
- Switches give you point-level detection (high alarm, low alarm, pump start, pump stop). One or two switches per tank, no continuous reading. Transmitters give you a continuous 4-20 mA or digital signal that tells you the level at every height, all the time. Use switches when you only need alarms and on/off pump control. Use a transmitter when you need to see actual level, calculate volume, or feed level into a control loop.
- Driven by the fluid (clean water, oil, slurry, foam, hot, corrosive), the vessel (tank, sump, silo, open channel), the range needed, and the accuracy required. Radar for almost everything liquid. Guided wave radar for foam, vapor, and small vessels. Ultrasonic for clean water and dry bulk. DP transmitters for closed pressurized tanks. Capacitance for sticky or coating fluids. Float for cheap on/off detection. Match technology to process - there's no universal winner.
