- Equipment designed for food, beverage, dairy, pharma, and biotech where the wetted surfaces have to be cleanable and free of crevices that could harbor bacteria. That means polished surfaces, sanitary clamp connections (Tri-Clamp), self-draining geometry, and FDA-compliant elastomers. Different design rules from industrial process piping.
- 3-A is the older standard for dairy and food equipment, focused on cleanability through good design (no crevices, drainable, accessible). BPE (Bioprocessing Equipment, ASME BPE) is the newer pharma and biotech standard, with tighter surface finish requirements, more stringent material traceability, and full documentation. If you're in dairy or food, 3-A is usually enough. If you're in pharma or biotech, BPE is the spec.
- Ra is the average surface roughness, measured in microinches or micrometers. Lower Ra means smoother surface and less bacterial harborage. Typical specs: 3-A allows Ra up to 32 µin for product contact surfaces in dairy and food. ASME BPE goes tighter for pharma, with SF1 at Ra 20 µin and SF4 (electropolished) at Ra 15 µin or below. The smoother the surface, the harder it is for biofilm to take hold.
