- An electric cylinder uses a motor (servo or stepper) driving a screw (ball, lead, or roller) to produce linear motion. Same external interface as a pneumatic cylinder (rod extends and retracts), but with programmable position, velocity, acceleration, and force. The standard for precision linear motion in machinery, packaging, and lab automation.
- When you need programmable position (not just full-extend or full-retract), tight repeatability (under 0.01 inch), variable force or velocity, or you can't tolerate air system noise and exhaust. Pneumatic still wins on speed, simplicity, and cost when you only need two positions. Electric wins everywhere else, especially if the load profile changes or you need motion data back from the cylinder.
