- An NFPA cylinder follows the National Fluid Power Association's interchangeability standard for tie-rod pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders. Dimensions, mounting patterns, and porting are standardized across manufacturers, so a Bimba, Parker, and SMC NFPA cylinder of the same bore and stroke are physically interchangeable. The plant-maintenance default in North America.
- NFPA is the American standard, ISO 15552 is the international equivalent. Both define interchangeable tie-rod cylinder dimensions, but the actual envelope dimensions, mounting hole patterns, and port locations are different. They're not cross-compatible. North American plants are mostly NFPA. European and global plants are mostly ISO. Stick with whichever your spare parts crib already stocks.
- Standard NFPA pneumatic cylinders are rated to 250 psi air. NFPA hydraulic cylinders come in pressure classes: 1,000 psi, 1,500 psi, 2,500 psi, and 3,000 psi are the common ones. Heavy-duty service goes higher with custom designs. Always check the rating against your system's maximum pressure, including shock loads from quick-acting valves.
