- FRL stands for Filter-Regulator-Lubricator. The three-stage air prep unit that goes between the plant air header and any pneumatic equipment. Filter removes water and dirt, regulator drops pressure to a set value and holds it steady, lubricator injects a fine oil mist for tools and cylinders that need it. Mount it at every machine and the equipment downstream lasts much longer.
- No. Modern pneumatic cylinders, valves, and air motors mostly come pre-lubricated and run fine on clean dry air without an external lubricator. Skip the lubricator and you avoid the mess and the need to keep the bowl topped up. The exceptions: high-cycle equipment, heavy-duty tools, and legacy components that were originally specified for lubricated air. Once you start lubricating a system, you have to keep doing it (the original lube gets washed out).
- 5 micron is the general-service standard. Drop to 0.01 micron with a coalescing filter for instrument air, lab use, paint spray, and anything sensitive to oil mist. For breathing air, add an activated carbon stage downstream of the coalescer. Pneumatic tools and cylinders are happy at 5 micron. Pneumatic instrumentation and precision controls need much finer.
