- A flow sensor is the sensing element that detects fluid motion or velocity. Sometimes it's a complete meter; sometimes it's just the wetted part of a larger system. The category covers paddle wheels, turbines, thermal dispersion probes, vortex shedding bars, and ultrasonic transducers. In casual use 'flow sensor' often means an inexpensive flow switch or low-end flow meter.
- Insertion sensors install through a small tap in the pipe wall, with the sensing element extending into the flow stream. Easy and cheap to retrofit, no need to cut out a spool, and they work on any pipe size. Inline (full-bore) sensors replace a section of pipe, so they see the entire flow stream and give better accuracy. Inline for new installs where accuracy matters, insertion for retrofits and larger pipes.
