- Three working principles. Mechanical traps (float and thermostatic, inverted bucket) use the density difference between steam and condensate to drive a valve. Thermostatic traps (bellows, bimetal) use the temperature difference, opening for cooler condensate and closing on hot steam. Thermodynamic traps (the disc style) use the velocity difference, snapping shut as flashing condensate accelerates through them. F&T and inverted bucket are the go-to for process equipment, thermostatic for tracer lines and drips, thermodynamic for outdoor steam mains where freeze tolerance matters.
- Failed open: the trap blows live steam through. You hear it, you can see it on a thermal imager, and you pay for the wasted steam. Failed closed: condensate backs up into the equipment, which loses heat transfer and starts hammering. Trap surveys (ultrasonic and thermal) catch both. Industry rule of thumb: roughly 20% of traps in an untracked plant are failed at any given time, which is a massive efficiency loss.
- Annual at minimum, semi-annual or quarterly for high-pressure or high-volume systems. The cost of a trap survey is recovered many times over in steam savings on a plant that hasn't been tracked. Tag every trap, log every inspection, and replace failed traps within the next outage. Per ASME PTC 39 (Steam Traps), testing methods include temperature, ultrasonic, and visual sight glass. The savings are real and measurable.
- On steam mains, drip stations, tracer lines, and outdoor service where freeze protection matters. Thermodynamic disc traps are compact, work over a wide pressure range, and tolerate freezing without damage. They cycle (snap open, snap closed) instead of modulating, which means a small amount of flash steam loss on each cycle - not ideal for high-efficiency process applications. Use them where their ruggedness and simplicity outweigh the small efficiency hit.
