- An industrial thermometer is a heavy-duty local-indication thermometer built for plant service. Stainless or coated steel case, glass-protected dial, threaded or flanged stem for thermowell mounting, and accuracy good enough for operations work (typically within 1% of full scale). The two main styles are bimetal and gas-actuated (Bourdon-tube), with electronic digital versions increasingly taking over for both.
- Bimetal uses a coiled strip of two metals that wind or unwind with temperature change, rotating the pointer. Simple, low cost, good for general service. Gas-actuated (or liquid-filled) uses a sealed bulb-and-capillary connected to a Bourdon tube. The bulb can be remote-mounted up to 100 feet from the dial via the capillary, which is the main advantage. Bimetal for direct stem mounting, gas-actuated when you need the dial somewhere other than the measurement point.
