- Use thermocouple extension wire (not regular copper) of the same type as the thermocouple itself. Type K thermocouple needs Type K extension wire; mix metals and you create a parasitic junction that adds error. Run the extension wire all the way to the controller or transmitter, not to a junction with copper. Quality extension wire is cheap insurance against the kind of bias errors that are nearly impossible to troubleshoot later.
- Type K (chromel/alumel) goes from -200 to 1260°C and is the most common industrial thermocouple by a wide margin. Type T (copper/constantan) handles -200 to 350°C and is the right pick for low temperature and cryogenics. Type J (iron/constantan) covers -40 to 750°C cheaply. Type E (chromel/constantan) has the highest output of the base-metal types from -200 to 900°C. Type N (nicrosil/nisil) is more stable than K over the same range. The platinum-rhodium types (R, S, B) get you up to 1700°C for furnaces and high-temperature work. For anything below 1200°C, just buy Type K unless there's a specific reason not to.
- Pt100 is a platinum RTD with a resistance of 100 ohms at 0°C. The platinum's resistance changes in a precise, well-characterized way with temperature, which gives much better accuracy and stability than any thermocouple. The default sensor for industrial temperature measurement below 600°C anywhere accuracy matters. Pt1000 is the same idea with 1000 ohms at 0°C, used for longer cable runs and small temperature differentials.
- 2-wire RTDs include lead wire resistance in the reading, which adds significant error on any long run. Only use for very short cable lengths or where accuracy isn't critical. 3-wire is the industrial standard - one extra wire lets the instrument compensate for lead wire resistance, accurate enough for almost all process work. 4-wire is the lab-grade configuration, full lead-wire compensation independent of cable length and resistance, used for the tightest accuracy and calibration work.
