- A ball valve has a drilled ball that rotates a quarter turn between fully open and fully closed. The bore lines up with the pipe when open, blocks it when closed. They're cheap, quick to operate, and have very low pressure drop. The trade-off is that they're not built for throttling.
- Full port matches the pipe ID, so flow goes straight through with almost no pressure drop and you can run a pig through it. Standard port has a smaller bore, costs less, and has slightly more pressure drop. For most isolation duty the standard port is fine. Spec full port when pigging, when pressure drop matters, or when the spec sheet calls it out.
- 1-piece is welded shut, dirt cheap, and not repairable. When it leaks you throw it out. 2-piece has a screwed end cap so you can replace seats, but the body still has to come out of the line. 3-piece bolts together with end caps that stay flanged to the pipe, so you can swing the body out, rebuild it, and bolt it back without disturbing the piping. Most maintenance shops insist on 3-piece for anything they expect to rebuild.
- Throttling. Sitting a ball valve at half-open puts the edges of the bore right in the fluid path, and the seats get chewed up by erosion in months. Also avoid them in slurry service unless the design has cavity fillers, since solids pack into the body cavity and lock the ball.
