- A flexible diaphragm gets pressed down onto a weir or seat to shut off flow. The diaphragm is the only part the fluid touches, so the working mechanism stays clean and isolated. That makes them the go-to for sanitary, ultra-pure, corrosive, and slurry service.
- Weir-type has an internal hump that the diaphragm closes against, short stroke, good throttling, easy to actuate. Straight-through has no internal obstruction and the diaphragm has to flex further to close, which makes it the right choice for slurries, viscous fluids, and anything that needs to be piggable.
- EPDM is the workhorse for water and hot water. Buna-N handles oils and general industrial. Viton handles most chemicals and higher temperatures. PTFE-faced diaphragms (with an elastomer backing for flex) cover aggressive chemicals and sanitary work. Always check a chemical compatibility chart, diaphragm choice will outweigh body material every time on service life.
