- A proportional solenoid valve uses variable coil current to position the plunger anywhere between closed and open. Instead of just on/off, you get modulating flow or pressure control. Used wherever you need fine variable control without the cost and complexity of a servo valve.
- Proportional valves are simple, robust, and cheap enough to be everywhere, single coil, spring return, current-driven position. Servo valves use a torque motor and flapper-nozzle stage for much faster response and tighter accuracy, but they need clean filtered fluid and cost an order of magnitude more. Servo for hydraulic motion control; proportional for everything else.
