- A pH transmitter takes the tiny millivolt signal coming off a pH electrode and turns it into a 4-20 mA signal a PLC or controller can read. You'll find them in water treatment, chemical processing, food and beverage, and pharma. Anywhere continuous pH monitoring is required, there's a transmitter doing the conversion.
- Standard calibration uses buffers at pH 4, 7, and 10. For most industrial work a two-point calibration with 4 and 7 (or 7 and 10, depending on your process range) is plenty. Pre-mixed buffers in 500 mL or 1-gallon bottles are the practical choice for routine field cal.
- A conductivity transmitter takes the signal from a conductivity probe and outputs 4-20 mA to the control system. The standard tool for tracking dissolved solids in cooling towers, boiler feedwater, RO systems, demineralized water, and CIP loops. If contamination shows up, conductivity is usually the first measurement to see it.
- The tells: slow response, can't calibrate within tolerance, drifting readings, or a calibration slope below 85% or above 105% of theoretical. Most industrial pH electrodes last 6 months to 2 years. Aggressive chemistry, high temperatures, and frequent cleaning cycles all shorten that significantly.
