FAQ
- Same as above (industrial-grade signal converter for conductivity probes), used wherever water purity or dissolved solids need monitoring. Cooling towers and boiler blowdown control are the two highest-volume applications, but you'll find them anywhere CIP, RO, or DI water is in use.
- It's the same hardware, scaled differently. Conductivity probes target moderate-to-high ionic content (cooling tower water, process streams). Resistivity probes target ultra-pure water where conductivity is nearly zero, and they read in megohm-cm instead of microsiemens/cm. If you're measuring DI or RO product water, you want a resistivity probe.
- Match the cell constant to the expected range: 0.01 for ultra-pure water, 0.1 for medium-purity (RO product, boiler condensate), 1.0 for general process water, 10 for high-conductivity brines and chemicals. Then choose contacting for clean service or toroidal for fouling, corrosive, or high-conductivity duty.
- Cell constant relates the physical geometry of the probe (electrode area and spacing) to the conductivity it can measure. A 0.01 cell handles low conductivity well but saturates in high-conductivity fluid. A 10.0 cell handles brines and chemicals but loses resolution in clean water. Get the cell constant wrong and your probe is either pegged at full scale or buried in noise.
- Clean when the trend line says it's drifting (typically monthly in fouling service, quarterly in clean water). Calibrate at the same interval, or whenever you clean. Some transmitters do automatic diagnostics that flag when a probe is fouling. Use that data and you can stop guessing at intervals.
