- A test gauge is a high-accuracy gauge (good to a quarter-percent of full scale or better) used for calibrating other gauges and verifying readings during commissioning. Larger dial, mirrored scale to eliminate parallax, knife-edge pointer, and a precision movement. Lives in a calibration shop or the instrument tech's case, not bolted to a process line for daily duty.
- Once a year is the standard interval for general work, more often if the gauge sees regular field use or rough handling. Calibration to NIST-traceable standards by a calibration lab gets you the certificate, but daily users should also do a quick zero check before any critical measurement. A test gauge that's been knocked around is no better than the field gauges it's supposed to verify.
