- psi (pounds per square inch): North American standard for almost everything. bar: European/metric default, roughly equal to atmospheric pressure (1 bar ≈ 14.5 psi). kPa (kilopascal): SI unit, 1 kPa ≈ 0.145 psi. inH2O (inches of water column): used for very low pressures like HVAC ductwork, where 1 inH2O ≈ 0.036 psi. Conversion table: 1 bar = 14.5 psi = 100 kPa = 401.5 inH2O. Most transmitters let you select the display units in configuration.
- Gauge: visual local indication, dial face, no electrical output. Transmitter: 4-20 mA or digital output to the control system, continuous remote reading. Transducer: similar to transmitter, sometimes with raw mV or 0-5 V output instead of 4-20 mA loop-powered. Switch: closes a contact at a setpoint, no continuous reading. Each one has its place - gauge for local indication, transmitter for control, transducer for OEM systems, switch for alarms and interlocks.
- Gauge pressure is measured relative to atmospheric pressure. It reads zero at atmospheric, positive when above, vacuum when below. This is what almost every industrial gauge and transmitter shows. Absolute pressure is measured relative to a true vacuum, so it's always positive. It's used for altitude measurement, vacuum work, and some scientific applications. Differential pressure is the difference between two pressures, used for flow across an orifice, filter loading, level in pressurized tanks, and any other DP measurement. Spec the wrong reference and your readings are off by an entire atmosphere.
