FAQ
- A pressure transmitter measures pressure and outputs 4-20 mA (or HART, fieldbus, digital) to a control system. The industrial workhorse for any pressure measurement that feeds into a PLC or DCS. Comes in gauge, absolute, and differential variants; in flush-mount and threaded process connections; and in everything from utility-grade ($300) to high-accuracy smart transmitters ($3000+).
- Analog transmitters output a fixed 4-20 mA proportional to pressure, with no feedback or diagnostics. Smart transmitters add a microprocessor, with HART or fieldbus comms, digital configuration, multiple ranges, drift detection, sensor diagnostics, and the ability to upload new firmware. The mA signal is the same; smart adds the digital channel alongside. Almost every new transmitter installed today is smart - the diagnostic value alone justifies the small extra cost.
- HART (Highway Addressable Remote Transducer) is a digital protocol that rides on top of the 4-20 mA analog signal. It lets you read more than just the primary value (sensor temperature, secondary variables, diagnostics, configuration) over the same two wires that carry the 4-20 mA. Use a HART handheld at the transmitter or pull the HART data into the DCS. Catches sensor drift and impulse line plugging before they trip the process.
- Pick a range where your normal operating pressure sits in the middle third (roughly 30-70% of full scale). That puts you in the most accurate part of the curve and leaves room for normal process upsets without saturating. Don't oversize blindly - a 0-1000 psi transmitter on a 50 psi process has terrible resolution at the actual operating point. Smart transmitters that can be re-ranged in software give you flexibility to dial in the right range after installation.
