- Centrifugal pumps are the default for water, chemicals, and light hydrocarbons - cheap, simple, high flow at moderate pressure. Positive displacement pumps (gear, lobe, screw, piston, diaphragm) take over when the fluid gets viscous or you need precise dosing. Peristaltic (hose) pumps run slurries, abrasives, and sanitary work without contaminating the fluid. Sump and submersibles drop into pits and below-grade applications. Metering pumps cover precise low-flow chemical injection. Each style has a flow-pressure curve and a viscosity range where it shines.
- Centrifugal pumps are simple, cheap, high flow at moderate pressure, and easy to control via discharge throttling or VFDs. Their flow drops as discharge pressure rises (they slip). PD pumps deliver constant flow regardless of pressure (they don't slip), which makes them right for high-viscosity fluids, accurate dosing, and high-pressure low-flow service. Centrifugal for water and bulk transfer; PD for everything centrifugal can't handle.
- NPSH stands for Net Positive Suction Head. It's the pressure available at the pump suction above the fluid's vapor pressure, expressed in feet (or meters) of head. The pump needs a minimum NPSH (NPSH required) to avoid cavitation; the system has to provide more (NPSH available). When available drops below required, the fluid flashes to vapor inside the pump and you get noise, vibration, and impeller damage in days.
